Parlamentari in pellegrinaggio a Londra sulla tomba di Tommaso Moro
Da questa sera con 120 persone, tra cui molti parlamentari di vari partiti, sono a Londra per un pellegrinaggio sui luoghi della vita e del martirio di san Tommaso Moro, il cancelliere inglese proclamato patrono dei governanti e dei politici da Giovanni Paolo II.
Come sapete alla figura del santo inglese, venerato dai cattolici e degli anglicani, la Fondazione Costruire il Futuro, ha dedicato una mostra inaugurata lo scorso ottobre alla Camera dei deputati, dove è stata ospitata per una settimana. In occasione dell’apertura dell’Anno della fede la mostra è stata quindi riproposta nei Palazzi della città del Vaticano. Ora è itinerante per le città italiane.

PER L’ANNO DELLA FEDE
Da dieci anni a questa parte propongo (in forma privata!!!) un pellegrinaggio ai politici, ai loro collaboratori e a funzionari delle Camere, a cui partecipa anche il cappellano di Montecitorio, monsignor Lorenzo Leuzzi. Negli anni scorsi le mete sono state la Terra Santa, Lourdes, San Pietroburgo, Fatima, La Siria e la Giordania, Santiago di Compostela, il Monte Athos, la Turchia sulle orme dell’apostolo Paolo. Quest’anno la decisione di celebrare l’Anno della fede ricordando la figura di san Tommaso Moro, giudice e Cancelliere della Corte inglese morto martire per mano di Enrico VIII di cui era stato fedele servitore, ma al quale non aveva voluto consegnare la propria coscienza.
Intervenendo a Westminster Hall il 17 settembre 2010, Benedetto XVI, citando Tommaso Moro, disse:
“In verità, le questioni di fondo che furono in gioco nel processo contro Tommaso Moro continuano a presentarsi, in termini sempre nuovi, con il mutare delle condizioni sociali. Ogni generazione, mentre cerca di promuovere il bene comune, deve chiedersi sempre di nuovo: quali sono le esigenze che i governi possono ragionevolmente imporre ai propri cittadini, e fin dove esse possono estendersi? A quale autorità ci si può appellare per risolvere i dilemmi morali? Queste questioni ci portano direttamente ai fondamenti etici del discorso civile. Se i principi morali che sostengono il processo democratico non si fondano, a loro volta, su nient’altro di più solido che sul consenso sociale, allora la fragilità del processo si mostra in tutta la sua evidenza. Qui si trova la reale sfida per la democrazia”.
Andare a Londra sulle orme di san Tommaso Moro, allora, non è un gesto commemorativo ma un aiuto alla memoria, un riscoprire, rivivere e approfondire le ragioni per le quali facciamo politica.
IL PROGRAMMA
Domani, sabato 19 ottobre, visiteremo a Westminster, con particolare riguardo a Westminster Hall, frequentata da Tommaso Moro prima come speaker of the House of Commons e in seguito come Lord Chancellor. Qui si trova la placca commemorativa a lui dedicata che ricorda il processo e la condanna per tradimento (1535).
Quindi la visita a Canterbury. Prima la chiesa di St Dunstan, dove è conservata la testa di Tommaso Moro recuperata dalla figlia Margaret Roper dopo l’esposizione sul ponte di Londra. Poi la Cattedrale, sede della Chiesa anglicana e luogo del martirio di Thomas Becket (1170). Qui, con un grande segnale di ecumenismo da parte della Chiesa anglicana, verrà celebrata la messa con rito cattolico per i partecipanti al pellegrinaggio.
Domenica 20 ottobre, visita alla Torre di Londra, dove Tommaso Moro fu imprigionato prima dell’esecuzione nella adiacente Tower Hill. Il suo corpo fu sepolto nella cappella di St. Peter ad Vincula, all’interno delle mura della Torre.
In questi due giorni incontreremo anche un gruppo di cristiani inglesi impegnati nella politica e nel sociale.
Papa Francesco ha chiesto ai cattolici di pregare per i politici:
“Il meglio è la preghiera. Preghiamo i governanti, perché ci governino bene, perché portino la nostra patria, la nostra nazione avanti e anche il mondo, che ci sia la pace e il bene comune”
noi in questo pellegrinaggio pregheremo per lui, a suo modo anche lui un “governante”, grati della sua testimonianza e dei suoi richiami.

Ministro Lupi, nel suo già ottimo agire quotidiano all’interno del governo non dimentichi due delle più importanti frasi scritte dal cancelliere-santo Thomas More.
Se Lei avesse sempre davanti agli occhi e davanti al cuore queste due indicazioni fondamentali per la politica, il Suo operato da ottimo si trasformerebbe in eccezionale e potrebbe forse dare una svolta alla vera crescita del nostro martoriato Paese.

San Tommaso Moro fu un esempio di quello che dovrebbe essere un cattolico impegnato in politica.
Il cattolico è leale alle istituzioni ma pronto a prendere le distanze da esse quando commettono errori.
Quando prende le distanze, non lo fa in modo eversivo ma sempre nel rispetto di tutti.
San Tommaso Moro non fece propaganda contro il re (né istigò le folle contro di lui per fare una rivoluzione) ma non riconobbe la scelta di quest’ultimo di divorziare dalla prima moglie Caterina d’Aragona e di risposarsi con Anna Bolena (1535) senza l’approvazione del Papa e di separarsi da Roma, ponendosi a capo della Chiesa d’Inghilterra.
